The Eto laboratory at Tokyo Polytechnic University, where graphic designer Takahiro Eto teaches, is used by around 40 students for classes and creation, and also serves as an exhibition room when holding events.

We have considered that an environment where students can actively output their own ideas and artworks is an important factor that enables objective verification of works, smooth communication between teacher and students, and visualization of activities in the laboratory.

In accordance, our concept was set to "show" both the artworks and the laboratory. We have divided the laboratory into three spaces with two panels: gallery (transmission) = visible, atelier (creation) = moderately visible, and backyard (storage) = not visible. By taking advantage of the architectural feature of the passageway being fully open, the plan was to create a space that is always open to the public.

The panels also function as free usable canvases, and the opening of panels and shelves can be turned into walls when holding an exhibition.

Every student's toolbox, equipment storage and chair are unified in containers to be the icon of the laboratory.
